Murray Smith je profesorem filosofie, umění a filmu a ředitelem Centra pro výzkum estetiky (Aesthetics Research Centre) na University of Kent. V letech 2014 až 2017 působil jako prezident Společnosti pro kognitivní studia pohyblivého obrazu (Society for Cognitive Studies of the Moving Image) a v letech 2017 až 2018 byl stipendistou nadace Laurance S. Rockefellera v Centru pro lidské hodnoty (Center for Human Values) na Princeton University. Je autorem řady odborných textů o filmu, umění a estetice.
